4 Ways to Celebrate and Honour the Autumn Equinox
March 20/21 marks the Earth’s Equinox, the moment of balance between day and night. In the Southern Hemisphere, we have shifted from Summer into Autumn. Here, in Brisbane, the days are still warm, but there’s a subtle shift in the air. The evenings are finally starting to cool, the sun sets a little earlier, and the blue of the sky is beginning to deepen.
Equinoxes have for centuries been seen as sacred turning points, natural invitations to pause, reflect, and realign with the rhythms of the Earth. These celestial moments offer us a chance to feel connected to something larger than ourselves, to flow with life instead of pushing against it.
It is a time of balance, of light and dark, inner and outer, doing and being. The Autumn Equinox moves us into a season of gratitude and letting go. Just as the trees begin to release their leaves, we too are invited to release what no longer serves and return to what sustains us.
What are you ready to release with gratitude?
What are you harvesting in your life right now?
Here are some ideas for celebrating and honouring this Autumn Equinox!
Create a Gratitude Harvest
Autumn is traditionally a time of harvest, of gathering in what has been growing and tending to what we’ve sown. Take a moment to reflect on the last few months: What have you been working towards? What has come to fruition? This can be big or small: new habits, relationships, ideas, or simply navigating a season of challenge.
Create a little gratitude harvest by journaling, creating art, or naming aloud the things you’re grateful for. You might even gather fallen leaves or autumn fruits and place them in a central spot in your home as a reminder of life’s abundance.
Restore Balance in Your Life
The Equinox is all about balance, making it a wonderful time to bring harmony into your life. You might choose one area of your life that feels a bit out of balance. Perhaps it’s your physical environment, self-care, or a chaotic schedule — and take one or more small steps to bring some gentle rhythm or order to it.
Intentional action in tune with the seasons can be surprisingly nourishing. Letting go of items (and energies) that no longer support your current season of life can create space for what matters most.
Honour the Element of Earth
Autumn is deeply connected with the Earth element: grounding, nourishing, and stabilising. One way to honour this energy is to spend time in nature, especially in places where you can see or feel the signs of seasonal change. Go barefoot on the grass, lie under a tree, or simply sit quietly and observe the shifting colours, textures, and light.
You might also cook a warm, earthy meal using seasonal produce: root vegetables, apples, pumpkins. As you prepare or eat, reflect on the idea of nourishment, not only through food but through rest, connection, and creativity.
Light a Candle for Letting Go
As the days shorten and we move inward, the Autumn Equinox can be a powerful time for release. Light a candle and take a few quiet moments to acknowledge something you're ready to let go of: a belief, a habit, a project, or even a role you've been carrying.
You might write it down and place it under the candle, or simply speak it aloud. Then allow the flame to represent the transformation — burning away what no longer serves, while illuminating your path forward.
As we move into the darker half of the year, remember that rest, reflection, and slowing down are vital parts of any meaningful cycle of growth. Trust that, like the trees, you can release what’s no longer needed and still stand tall.
And if you’re looking to align your home and life with these natural rhythms, now is a beautiful time to begin or recommit to your tidying journey. If you would like some support or to have a chat about next steps, you can schedule a no-pressure complimentary clarity call.
